Every human being (women but also men!) have a pelvic floor, also called perineum.
BUT WHAT IS A PELVIC FLOOR?
The pelvic floor is a gathering of muscles which is located in the pelvis from the front to the back. It goes from the rear part of the pubis to the coccyx. More simply, it can be compared to a hammock that surrounds and supports our organs.
It is made of several layers of muscles, ligaments and membrane. There are 3 holes on a women’s body, also called “sphincter”: corresponding to the bladder, the vagina, and the anus.

HOW DOES THE PELVIC FLOOR WORK?
It is the contraction of sphincters which enables to partially or totally close the holes. This contraction regulates the opening and closing of the different canals (urethra, vagina, and anus).
Regarding the bladder for example, the pelvic floor closes the urinary sphincter. It regulates the closure of the urethra to prevent urine from leaking.
SO WHY DO I HAVE URINARY LEAKS?
The strength of the pelvic floor maintains the urinary canal closed. This strength must be stronger than any others that would press on the bladder. Leaks come when the pelvic floor is not toned enough. In that case, the sphincter can’t be closed correctly.
For a better pelvic floor control
Imagine the pelvic floor like a balloon, and the sphincter like the orifice of the balloon. If the tip is loose, the air comes out, so it has to be closed tight for the air to stay inside. It is thanks to the pelvic floor that we can do that!
